Im confused, doesnt this start to make AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile essentially less useful.
Apple is saying use just for Emergency purposes for text and calls when you are without services, but what's going to stop people from really just using this especially now they support RSC and you can communicate with Android people even without data.
Edit : Google is doing the same thing soon with Android phones.

However, it seems like Apple is not stopping with just the SOS and aims to make its iPhone a true satellite device to assist in all sorts of emergencies. In line with this goal the Cupertino tech giant announced "Messages via Satellite" with iOS 18 at WWDC 2024. This new feature will enable iPhone users to send messages even without cellular or Wi-Fi connections.

This new  Messages via Satellite feature in iOS 18 uses the same advanced technology as Apple's existing satellite capabilities. When users are in areas without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage, their iPhone will prompt them to connect to the nearest satellite through the Messages app. This feature will enable them to send and receive texts, emojis, and Tapbacks over both iMessage and SMS, ensuring continuous connectivity regardless of location.

My guess is that this won’t be available unless you have no cell service.

Wonder if this will work in reverse for "Find my phone"?

I’d be fricking stoked for that. There is a LOT of area out here with no coverage, and they’re the places I want to be most. Just kind of tough when you’re expected to field calls at any time of day.

Looks like no more dead people in deserts, mountains, and hiking trails.

The newer iPhones have had the SatCom emergency text service for around a year or so. Very convenient when fishing in the marsh or offshore and out of cellular range.

There won’t be voice for a while, satellite connectivity is on the order of bytes per minute. Just not fast enough yet.

You wouldn't want to use that normally. It's expensive and slow AF. Maybe one day but not now or in the immediate future.
