Years ago, while doing field work as a Probation Officer, did a home visit (unarmed-gun in my car and I hadn't put it on, yet) at a home of a case who had recently transferred from Puerto Rico. I knock on the door and a nearly nude woman opens the door screaming in Spanish. She had red marks on her neck. Out comes the case, fully nude where he was in progress of raping her until I arrived. I had to run to my car, get my gun, call for backup and wait for local Sheriff's deputies to arrive. It was a freaking mess to say the least.
Our guns were optional and I will admit that until that day, I would on occasions not wear it when I was working in better areas. From that day on, I never went out without all of my gear on my body and backup weapons available to me.

One of my past jobs required that I be on call 24/7. Due to these circumstances I kept a handgun in my vehicle just in case. I got called out one night at around 3AM and another vehicle on I70 began to deliberately force me onto the shoulder of the interstate. I slowed down to try and let them go ahead and not antagonize the people in the vehicle. Eventually they slowed down to 45 mph on a 70 mph interstate to engage me. The right rear passenger on the 4 door SUV took the opportunity to open his door and aim his a handgun at me. I took the opportunity to roll my window down aim my handgun back at them. They sped up, I got off on my exit and end of story.
I suppose this is a case of "I didn't forget my gun"
