You lose whatever cash you paid for extras. I didn't think there were any penalties other than that. You're basically helping them pick out the floorplan and finishes for a spec home is all you're doing. Somebody else will buy it.

The energy efficiency argument is somewhat compelling, but other than that there's not a lot to love about contemporary building techniques. I can't so much as drink a glass of water in a house with a slab foundation or a fiberglass bathtub.
