I got my PPL at Fly By Knight in Hammond. Absolutely no complaints about Sharon and her group. As far as ground school, it is required but you can save yourself alot of money by doing it online. I used King Schools Online program and aced my written. It costs about 250 dollars for the whole online program but it'll save you a ton of money by not having to pay 40/hr to the CFI for ground school. Kings will also endorse your logbook to grant you access to the FAA written once you've completed the program.

Is ground school necessary or can I just learn on my own and then prove to a CFI that I’m ready to the written?
It depends, it is not mandatory, but some people learn better that way. If you DO learn that way, going to a part 141 school may be best for your style. If you can self study and are motivated, you can do it in your own. The FAA puts out a document with the requirements for PPL, get a copy of it. My instructor told me what we would cover next time and I would study up and be prepared. Never took ground school
