Presumably the most distinguished Southeastern Louisiana University graduate in jazz history
Can you imagine a cool NYC jazz hepcat spending 4 years in Hammond Louisiana? In the late '40s yet?
Ironically enough, Evans credited several music professors there as being major influences on his work, and later said his years in Hammond were the happiest of his life.
If you want to pay homage, he's buried at Roselawn cemetery in Baton Rouge:
He got a nice spot, right under the tree.

People used to cruise around downtown looking for construction sites for metal detecting. Early Saturday and Sunday mornings, you’d see the same guys out hunting through the torn up streets, parking lots, etc. Police would show up every once in a while and run you off. The parking lot by the Pentagon Barracks and another one by Zachary Taylor’s house were torn up and gave up lots of goodies. People would even follow the trucks that hauled off the dirt from the sites and go through the dirt after it was dumped.
This was in the 1990’s before I moved - people still might do it today.
