This time next year I will be graduating with an ME degree but I'm wondering what should my next goal be. My gf's uncle said look into fire protection but I'm trying to figure out what that entails. Are there other specializations that are booming right now?

there are a million things you can do with a ME degree... I'd suggest getting an internship and seeing what you like

I wouldn't recommend tying yourself to a specialization straight out of college. Go work for an engineering firm and learn as much different stuff as you can.

By the time you take and pass the PE you should have a good idea if you want to be a subject matter expect or a jack of all trades.

Stay out of fire protection. Did it for 3 years and hated it. Get into manufacturing. Not too stressful, great $$, lots of opportunity for advancement.

Try law school. Uncle of mine said they're starting them (engineering lawyers?) at like $250K/year or something ridiculous. Something dealing with patents and shite.

I also have no idea what I'm talking about, so keep that in mind

A lot of the Automation engineers and programmers I work with are ME by degree.

Honestly, I think you are putting the cart before the horse...graduate, see what options are available, pick one....

ME grad school worked out well for me. Although I started while the economy was in shambles so the $20,000/year TA salary wasn't that depressing.
