You can actually google free camping and find no and little cost primitive camping spots. There is one particular website but I can't remember it

Lost Maples state park, in the hill country, has 12 mile hiking loop with primitive camping along the way. Two "cold" natural springs along the trail. Maple trees should be orange this time of year.

Enchanted Rock is right outside of Austin. Primitive spots go fast so call first

Head to Terlingua Texas, plenty of primitive, remote, secluded places in Big Bend National and State Parks. You could park your truck around the area and sleep in it. Terlingua will give you a different perspective on life. I-10 West, a long way...and then south towards the border.

Rio Grande Valley will have a lot of remote spots. Stop on by in South Padre while you are there
Heading out towards Kerrville is really pretty this time of year as well
