Anesthesiologist? Not sure in regards to their pay and saturation.
CRNA? My wife is in the field and when we were looking it is very over saturated due to OLOL having an anesthesia program. Average pay seems to be around $120k. Which is roughly $30-$40k less than what she gets here in Georgia. Also not alot of jobs in Louisiana. For a good reference point, look on Gasworks and see what jobs are listed and what the pay is. The have Anesthesiologist slots as well as CRNA and AA slots and pay on there.

Why is the pay so extraordinarily high?
They can be drug dealers. Its not rare for people that own pain clinics to make 7 figures a year but its getting harder and harder for them due to the DEA cracking down.

Two liter, my brother runs his practice South Louisiana. Mostly procedures. He only takes insurance to cut down on the trash seeking scripts. I am sure he would be more than happy to answer any questions you may have. He is board certified in both anesthesia and pain. He just came back from a conference that was all doom and gloom about obamacare.
I can forward you his email. MSTiger33@gmail.com

There is a surgery center opening in North BR by the airport, Champion Healthcare. They said they will focus on orthopedic procedures.

I just can't figure how general practitioners make $150,000 or so, but these dudes make $400,000?
Why don't all general practitioners become pain doctors? What's the deal?

#1: Competitive residency selections
#2: Some physicians aren't cut out for that.

Some make more. It really depends on their contracts. Some are in groups and get profit share. But it needs to be noted, with great pay comes high student loan debt. Some CRNAs walk away with over$250k in student loan debt. Luckily my wife had her shite together and ended up with only $30k in debt. No telling how much debt Anesthesiologsts have after school.

Pain docs do more than just write scripts. Plus the legit pain docs are either board certified in anesthesia and/or pain.
Here is a list of procedures performed by most legit pain docs

I know a few PM+R docs making big $ doing pain management. Probably on the scale of 300-350k doing 2 days in the fluoro suite and 2.5 days doing evaluations/med management.
That being said, you couldn't pay me enough to deal with that patient population.
(Strictly employees working 4-4.5 days/week with no call. Buy into ownership and you're looking at 400k plus)

Wait - you're saying the median salary of pain management doctors in La is over $500k?
Posted on 4/8/14 at 9:06 pm to ThisWayChad
Depends on what they do and yes they can make over $500k

Can make over $500k is one thing, but the median?

What kind of stuff are you looking to get in to? Office stuff like ESI's and RFL or do you want to manage pumps and stimulators? Academics may offer a good mix of OR and pain if that's an option for you - when I interviewed at Tulane two years ago the chair wanted a boarded pain guy to do some clinic with OR mixed in. Not sure how their staffing is now.

I know a few pain guys personally that make around $700k. They work like dogs and have crazy arse clinic hours in addition to inpatient consults. Not for me - I like leaving the hospital being carefree and not having the answering service being a page away with a pill head on the other line.

Nobody is making over $500k unless they have bought into an ortho group or another group that owns their own fluoro suite. The big money in pain management is owning the facility, as well as having physical therapist and other ancillary staff on your payroll.

The latest MGMA data (basically salary survey data for physicians) that I've seen shows anesthesiologists in the region which contains LA (but also has TX among other states) has the median salary ~$500k. I'm assuming pain docs (at least board certified) make that much or more.
