An example of the failed "journalism" at nola.com

Here's an article about a murder.
LINK
Here is the text of the article:
This was posted on Sunday, with a by-line with the name of the author of the "article".
Now, here is what was reported on the SBSO facebook page.
Now, what exactly did the "reporter" do? She took a facebook post from the police, changed one or two words, and wrote it as an article, with a by-line, with no other information.
Far too often, this is what passed for "journalism" over there.

The St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fatal shooting of a man in Chalmette Saturday night (May 4). The shooting occurred around 8:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of Shangri-La Drive, Sheriff James Pohlmann said. No further information was immediately available.

:sigh:"
Okay, you have PLENTY of reasons/ways to criticize local media outlets for shoddy journalism
But this isn't one of them, they are reporting breaking news with an incident report. Better than nothing

out of all things to criticize journalists for this is the angle you play. son I have some bad news

dude, just be grateful it's not another article reporting a tweet.

That's the worst example of what you're trying to display.

It's an article reposting a facebook post... that's somehow better?

NOLA.com blows but this is a stretch

It was posted 15 hours after the incident, hardly "breaking news".
If they would have posted it without a byline, I would be fine with that.
My issue is the reporter taking credit here. She didn't do anything except copy and paste a facebook post.

To me it's a fine example of the absolute joke the paper/website has become.
Is it the worst example? No. But it's a simple one.

I guess he looking for something a little more noir.
quote:
It gets hot in the city in May but for one hardboiled detective in St. Bernard, the heat reached the boiling point as fate intertwined itself between him and one poor sap who found himself on the wrong end of a slug at half past eight in the evening.
One Sheriff James Pohlmann could only shake his head and ruefully think to himself that Shangri-La wasn't all it was cracked up to be.

Yes, it's a restatement of public knowledge.
Not a "So and so posted on facebook today..." or "Trump tweeted today...".
I swear, those articles are prima facie why MSM needs to die.

This is an incredibly strange outrage.

Any newspaper in the country would've posted the same. It's literally all the info available. As more comes in, they update. It happens with any breaking news story.
This is an awful complaint.

Observation more than outrage. I mean, somehow, my life will be able to go on...

they have only three sentences total of information dude
wtf do you want from that?

You do know that "once upon a time" this was done every day as a phone call between public entities like police departments and the newspaper and the paper would basically print the information shared from the PD for public knowledge
I'd love to dig in with you on shoddy journalism but we need to start over with a better case study in the OP

fwiw this is still the SOP for local TV and newspaper media. Every so many hours someone will start making calls to dispatch to see if there's anything that they're working on at the moment.

Right... usually without a reporter by-line though.
Of course, that was in the days before police depts could communicate directly with the public.
So maybe that is the issue, then? If the police dept already distributed the information directly to the public, and the local newspaper simply reprints it with no additional information, then what exactly is the need for the local newspaper? Sounds to me like this is just filler.
