I’m in the Florida panhandle and I got an amber alert for Dade county (Miami) at 4:50am today, 12+ hour car drive from me? Come on. How can we at least not send them more locally?

Kidnapped kids are never taken hours away or even across states lines right?

I turned off Amber Alerts because several went off during the twilight hours and woke me up.

I did, however, leave on my Ebony Alerts.

a .05% chance of helping

Of the 254 AMBER Alerts issued from January 1, 2021, to December 31, 2021, 252 cases resulted in a recovery, 51 of which were successfully recovered as a direct result of an AMBER Alert being issued.

I’ll have to read a little further on it. Because I too recall the first statistic (<1% chance of helping). You argue it is closer to 98% which seems unlikely as well.

The inherent flaw in the entire amber alert system is that when the child is reported missing (usually sometime in the afternoon), it takes hours before the amber alert is issued. Then they send out waves of alerts in larger mile radii’. By the time most people get it, the time is after 2 AM. There are not too many people out and about at 2 AM to observe a kidnapped child.

All the alerts do is wake people up in bed and freak them out thinking something is happening in their neighborhood. The last amber alert I got before I disabled it was at 2AM for someone who lived 20+ miles away.

It took me 11-12 hours to get from Baton Rouge to Naples. I got the same alert today and didn’t get pissed.

Omg Liz you are sooo right! I was thinking Key west not Miami’s!!! I’m sooo sorry, what was I thinking!!!

A 9 hour trip could be 4 states away, maybe more in certain areas. It was 4:50am. I’ll turn it off, because the solution instead of trying to help find predators during normal times is to just turn it off completely and then I’m never involved. Perfect!

You know you can turn it off in your settings?

ETA: I turned mine and all my family’s off so I don’t get woken up in the middle of the night

Yep I did this when one went off at 11pm on a weeknight. Sending one out at that time was a complete dick move because they know most people are at home in bed.

You should be able to turn them off in your phone’s settings. On iPhone, you can turn those off specifically while leaving other emergency alerts on. I’d imagine it’s the same on other phones.
