Amazon is entering into an agreement for a new last-mile facility in the town of Boyce in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. The new facility will be approximately 65,000 square feet located along Highway 1, off of Rapides Station Road.

65,000 sq. ft. is a good sized building.

The new Amazon facility in Baton Rouge is 3.8 million sq. ft. YUUUUGE.

50/50 whether it will actually be used. I have an Amazon facility 10 mins from me that was built 3 years ago and the only activity is a security patrol.

It’s great and all and only 20 minutes from my house, but what is Amazon trying to accomplish? They built a 5 story building in Shreveport across from my office that isn’t being used at the moment and currently building another building in west Shreveport. Clarence and Baton Rouge has facilities now. Now a building in Boyce. They’re popping up like Dollar Generals. It seems like building buildings too close together could be harmful in the long run. Walmart learned this mistake by building their Distribution Centers too close to one another.

Not even half the size of the average Super Walmart. The average for a SWM is around 180K sq ft

Yea that's a fulfillment center that houses everything popular in that region someone might order. A last-mile facility will stock stuff people order on a more regular basis. Things like normal household items.

I send stuff to FBA and based on what it is I always find it interesting which facility Amazon sends it to. I have stuff in Canada and MX facilities.

Different facilities serve different purposes. See my post above but the last mile facilities are for normal items people order frequently and they are trying to achieve one-day or same-day deliveries on those items.

You could look at it like this. Each Walmart Supercenter is essentially distribution center in Amazon's world.

If it carries the normal junk people order every day, that could open up an Amazon area for same day or next day shipping. by opening so many last mile facilities. Your Amazon experience is the same as going to the store.

I know this would screw with their overhead, but with all this Amazon real estate, maybe they could consider opening up some of the warehouse space for a new division. I will call it Amazon Prime Club Warehouse. It would be a Sams Club with a limited selection of bulk items and most ordered items in a region at an Amazon facility. In order to get in you have to be a Prime Member, like Sams Club or Costco. They can even start a Prime Gas Station and or serve food on the cheap.

They're building shite everywhere yet I still only manage to get maybe 1/10 items I buy delivered within the original Prime window.

Distribution centers and Supercenters are not the same thing.

Distribution centers are where everything is palletized and loaded on trucks and hauled to the Supercenters and other stores.

Speaking strictly on Walmart. I’ve not been in Amazon DCs. I’ve been in plenty of Walmart DCs.

You've probably uncovered the real reason they bought in Boyce. Some yahoo tabbed to autocomplete and meant to expand in Boise but they ended up in Boyce.

I once watched a loaded Amazon trailer, a 53 footer, sit on the shoulder of the road no more than two miles from a warehouse for at least a week and a half before anyone bothered to come pick it up.

I didn't get through there for three or four days, so I don't know when exactly they did pick it up. It could have very well been two weeks that it sat. I'm surprised no one tried to clean it out, I guess that says something about the area.

I wasn't meaning it like that.

What I was talking about is that if you need paper towels, and you order it. Amazon has to ship it out from a Distribution Center. Walmart can ship the same paper towels from a store nearby because it is on the shelf or sitting in the stock area at Walmart. It can be delivered to your house in a matter or hours or minutes. Essentially making each Walmart location potentially a distribution center.

Walmart has an edge here because it has hundreds of stores that can act like last mile warehouses to get you those paper towels in a few hours instead of having to wait for a few days.

Amazon is having to build out facilities that can do this.

Ironically, Amazon should be buying up old Sears and Kmart locations for this.

Most of my Prime orders arrive in 5-7 days even though it shows 2 day delivery when I place the order. I have started using my free Walmart+ due to Amazon slow delivery.

Maybe Boyce can get enough money from it to rehire the entire police force (6 guys) back!
