Plans for the Amazon fulfillment center at the site of the former Cortana Mall are continuing to increase in size.

CSRS, which is doing engineering work for Amazon’s property developer, filed revised plans Tuesday with the Planning Commission for a nearly 3.5 million-square-foot warehouse, which is nearly 20% larger than the 2.9 million-square-foot facility originally planned for the site.

The number of parking spaces has also increased again—to 1,840 from 1,813. Originally, plans called for just 1,200 spaces.

Employees at Amazon fulfillment centers generally work 12-hour shifts, so 1,840 employee parking spaces suggests the facility will employ more than 3,600 workers.

Revised plans for the facility also show the building will be five stories tall, not four that renderings originally depicted. The 10-foot increase will enable the facility to utilize the latest generation of Amazon’s robotics technology, logistics experts say.

I’ll believe it when I see it. They’re going to have staffing issues. Both hiring and getting people to show up for work.

Amazon starts at 16 an hour, I think. So that’s not too bad for a college kid or something.

I think the math is wrong on the low side here.

I would think they're not going to limit their hiring pool to the ghetto of North Baton Rouge.

Plenty of folks from Livingston, Ascension and non shithole parts of EBR will be there.

They can't and won't. This will draw workers from all over the metro area. North Baton Rouge included.

Amazon is also said to be considering sites for additional facilities in the Capital Region.

Damn. Cortana will make the 3rd, and it's frigging giant.

What else? Another local hub in Livingston/Hammond?

Watching this spring on Zillow, houses in Broadmoor are getting offers in days and prices look to be rising. Looks like a little speculative boom is starting over on that side of town.

Broadmoor was already in the midst of a resurgence with the renovations happening there. It's only 5-6 years behind Tara. No surprise that pricings are climbing there especially now that Cortana is getting demolished and their elementary school is getting completely rebuilt.

What I hope to see is that kind of thing spread to Sherwood, Villa Del Ray, Monterrey, and Woodgate.

I imagine some of the remaining outparcels around Cortana will end up going to fast casual restaurants, Starbucks, fork lift service centers, truck service centers, and C-stores. At least the ones not directly associated with Amazon's businesses.

I try to be positive about Baton Rouge to balance out all of you Livingston and New Orleans posters that trash it constantly. But I honestly don't think I could imagine a better realistic outcome for the old Cortana property. This is an excellent thing for the city and the state.

Is this going to require expansion of the airport to accommodate what I assume will be increased cargo volume?

Amazon routinely pays over $15 /hour for labor, and local businesses are going to see the (already tight) employment market dry up quickly. Businesses need to begin increasing their compensation now in order to retain and hire new employees.

I said it a week ago and it still stands.

If the parishes of EBR, WBR, Ascension and Livingston don't parlay Amazon's expansion in the Baton Rouge metro area into a public-private partnership for infrastructure improvements like new roads, widening of roads, airport upgrades and so on, then we are absolutely incompetent as a state and deserve to be last in the country in every meaningful metric.

Already in their master plan. Plenty of room to expand 22R runway now; there will be more once they move Plank Road. And there's ample real estate earmarked for cargo operations on the north side of the airport.
