Most of the Nightshade family is toxic in some form or another to humans. thats is why the "burn" from peppers effects people. most have the ability to tolerate it

Night shade includes: bell peppers, spicy peppers, egg plant, potatoes and tomatoes (plus paprika and cayenne as they are derived from seeds of these plants)

i know this as my wife has an intolerance to all but the tomatoes.
