I'll come up with an answer when I finish my beer.

Alcoholism is not a disease ,and people like my father who say bullshite like that are trying to use that line to excuse their actions. At the end of the day it is a choice just like any other addiction. If you can't control yourself while doing something ie alcohol, gambling, drugs etc. than you need to remove yourself from the temptation. That whole bs about people who are addicted have a disease is a slap in the face to people who are actually fighting a real disease.

I think you and festus are basing your opinions on a super small sample size. I get it, that y’all have been hurt by an alcoholic/addict in your life and you’re mad. I don’t blame you fo being mad. But, my experience as that the vast majority of addicts and alcoholics do not use the “disease” as a crutch.
The way I view the disease is that I have it and there is “medicine” available to make me better. By medicine, i mean 12 step program and psychological help. If I don’t take my medicine then my disease won’t get better. I don’t use it as a crutch because there is a solution...where as with terminal diseases there are no cure.
I hate to relate this to cancer because it’s not fair but I think of it like if I had cancer that was curable but I didn’t accept the chemo or surgery then that’s the same as an alcoholic not going to rehab, AA, etc. Once diagnosed with the disease, why not take the “medicine” to get better.
This point of view is what helped me get sober. I’m no doctor or scientist but it being labeled as a disease has kept me sober for 8 years. It’s hard to explain so I hope that makes sense.

Cancer is a disease. Not someone who has such little self control they can’t stop buying and drinking alcohol. That isn’t a disease.

The alcoholic that is blaming their condition on a disease and using that as an excuse is just looking for another out. They don't want help or sobriety no matter how much pressure they feel from family, spouses, work. We are always going to give you some bull shite you don't believe. I've never used the label as I have a disease to hide or lie to anyone and I think I'm getting over on them. I'm throwing my personal shite out there 1000%
Ask if you're dealing with someone struggling with drinking and I'll answer your questions from a self proclaimed alcoholic.

It won't make sense to the majority because they don't have to deal with the thought process of "I'm not going to eat today because I'm going to get shite housed tonight. Food wrecks my buzz"

Seriously, if I'm drinking that night, I don't eat solid food that exceeds 900 calories.

I didn’t eat cause I couldn’t afford it. Drugs and alcohol got expensive.

I've been fortunate that I've never dappled in any kind of drugs. It scares the fricking shite out of me because of my personalit and that's why I don't poke that bear or gambling
I had 10 or so pills of 10mg of Oxys *that sat for 2 years in my bathroom cabinet. I eventually just flushed them
*after a root canal issue

I’ve got 2 years sober on July 20th.
I never had a drinking problem, I had a stopping problem. Feels incredible to remember conversations and coach my kids again.

Nicely done sir
In my decade of booze, I've managed a 41 day stretch of sobriety
I've gotten that red coin they give in AA 2 times
I can tile my floor with silver 24 hour chips. I've been to so many I just stop picking up a chip, what's the point

Congrats. Things get a lot better after 2-3 years. If you think it’s good now, just wait

Generally speaking, any true addiction is a disease. There was alcoholism in my family, and it’s far more than a “ habit” that’s hard to quit.
