We'll be driving from Vicksburg, MS to Chattanooga, TN on Monday passing through Birmingham about one or two o'clock. With I-20 closed through downtown how is the traffic on I-459 at that time of day? Is there any alternative routes we should look at, or should we just let Waze handle the situation?

TIA

No problems at that time of day on a Monday. 459 usually stays open except the 65 to 280 stretch at around 4-6pm

You’ll be fine. Don’t speed though. State troopers sit on the ramps with radar.

Do 80 or 40, those are the only two speeds accepted.

Just get on 459 on the south end and cruise through. Not too much traffic in the early afternoon. Actually 459 would be preferred. That stretch of 20/59 is rough and you’ll avoid the downtown cluster right now.

I encourage you to drive through the and take the Ensley Avenue exit or the Arkadelphia Road exit. Many nice places to see on those exits.

Reminiscent of Kabul or Beirut.

Culture abounds.

I would recommend 459 either way.

59 through Bham will shake your fillings loose.

Don't try to get this baw killed. I drive down Arkadelphia occasionally going to my wife's aunts in Adamsville. What did they rename R M Scrushy Hwy to? That area is pretty sketchy too.

IIRC, it wasn't long after they named the highway after him that he got in trouble with the law. Honestly I can't remember what road it was called before or after. Pretty much if you take I-20/59 through town, instead of I-459 around, you had better make sure you don't have to get gas or go to the bathroom from about exit 118 to the I-65 interchange and on past the airport exit (exit 129)

I think it is Richard Arrington, Jr. Boulevard now. I was trying to find it on a map. I'm glad Alabama recognizes my concealed carry when I drive through there occasionally.
