Al Roker announced on TODAY that he has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and will be undergoing surgery to have his prostate removed.

The 66-year-old TODAY weatherman and co-host explained he wanted to publicly reveal his diagnosis to spotlight the fact that 1 in 7 African American men, 1 in 9 men overall, will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.

"It's a good news-bad news kind of thing," Al said. "Good news is we caught it early. Not great news is that it's a little aggressive, so I'm going to be taking some time off to take care of this."

Damn that. Sounds like the same kind of diagnosis my grandfather had. Originally diagnosed in 2012 put it into remission pretty quick, then it came back in 2015. He passed last month after the long battle. After watching his final months I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

It is something you can live with for a period of time but eventually it just eats at your bones and drains you.

That's a tough one. I hope they can find a way to detect it sooner.

Yea it always seemed like some bullshite the best science we could come up with was a finger in the arse. Just as a mammogram is standard for breast cancer detection, they need to have a non-invasive scan in addition to the PSA test. Might as well scan for testicular cancer too while they are sending rays through that region of your body.

Agree. There seems to be no really good test to screen for it.

I am celebrating my one year anniversary of completing 39 weeks of radiation treatment this week. While there are no symptoms, a simple blood test to get a PSA reading, can give you a heads up. A reading of 0 - 4 is considered normal. I had a reading of 11.0. A complete prostate exam, including said finger up the butt & a prostate biopsy ( both no biggie ) determined that I had prostate cancer. However, it had not spread out of the gland & I had the choice of removing the gland itself or taking radiation treatment. Both offer a 80 % + chance at recovery. I chose radiation & had zero side effects, nadda. After completion of my treatment, my PSA number is now .01. My life expectancy jumped from 5 yrs to 11 - 13 yrs. At my age, I'll take it. GET TESTED, staring at age 40. My radiologist told me that I will probably die with it, not because of it.
