quote:Depends on where you grew up. I grew up in New Orleans and I had a couple friends who went the public route (as long as they got into Ben Franklin or Haynes) but legitimately 99% of my friends were in private school.
Is this a trend that other people are seeing, too?
I'm around 30 for age reference. There are some places like New Orleans and to an extent Baton Rouge where public school is not a viable option. It's not exclusively an academic thing either. About 80% of the public's in our area are extremely underfunded, don't compete athletically (despite being very large schools), and are legitimately dangerous.
There is little to no alumni network to speak of. You don't have many (really any) doctors, lawyers, and business men sending their kids there. I got my start in the legal field as a 16 year old doing court runs for my friend's dad. I have friends that make big money working for investment firms along the east and west coast, all because of an internship at 17 from an alumni and/or friend's parent. They wouldn't have gotten those opportunities if they went to EJ, Grace King, or Bonnabel.

Eating out aside... just buying cheap groceries is not easy.
For only two, it's almost the same, and you don't have to do dishes after.
Basic burger ingredients from Walmart (assuming I already have mustard, mayo, ketchup, etc.)
All Natural* 80% Lean/20% Fat Ground Beef Chuck, 1 lb Tray $6.93
Sunbeam Jumbo Seeded Hamburger Buns, 8 Count $4.12
Sargento® Sliced Smokehouse Cheddar™, 11 slices $2.97
Fresh Iceberg Lettuce, Each $1.88
Fresh Whole Red Onion, Each $1.15
Total $17.05 for two burgers
Burgersmith USDA Organic Beef Burger $11x2 = $22
Five Guys Cheeseburger $9.89x2 = $19.78
Curbside Classic $8.49x2 = $16.98
MOOYAH Cheeseburger $6.79x2 = $13.58

Car Repairs/oil changes — the days of the “shade tree” mechanic are mostly gone with vehicles that have a bunch of computer chips and the need for specialized equipment to read them. Even something that used to be simple, like changing oil, is now complicated by the fact that everything is so crammed together under the hood, or below the engine, that it can be like taking a puzzle apart and putting it back together.
Some folks can still do their own repairs, but the time factor involved just doesn’t make it very practical.

What happened to baby sitters? It seems like every neighborhood had one or two moms who babysat. They would have 5 or 6 kids, during the school year they only had to watch the young kids all day then the other ones would get dropped off by the bus then stay there until their parents came pick them up.
I think they still exist but they cost just as much as a daycare, maybe a little less. I also have to wonder if the state requires certain things for you to even run such an operation now.
I went to a babysitter in our neighborhood as a small child.

Nothing on your list is anything you HAVE to pay for. All are luxery items.

[One of history's few iron laws is that luxuries tend to become necessities and to spawn new obligations. Once people get used to a certain luxury, they take it for granted. Then they begin to count on it. Finally they reach a point where they can't live without it.

year...now families go on 3-4-5+ vacations in a year easily. That's thousands of dollars more.
Well, there’s a very good reason for that.

No, it's so much better to buy expensive original vinyl records (says the guy who owns a record shop).

Well at least your somewhat out of date business model still has value over time, but yeah I feel your pain.

I use Walmart+ for most groceries now. Just easier to see and plan my expenses and they put it at my front door.
Aldi is great for meat/produce/milk. Just everything really even with a limited selection.
I like to rotate around

Or just stream youtube music via a browser or smartubenext app to avoid ads and get all music completely on demand for free.
Or just listen to the thousands upon thousands of free independent radio and music online from anywhere in the world and not have to listen to the same songs over and over with pandora or any other paid service or collection. No matter how big it is.

quote:
Wifi/Internet - easily $100 a month
Free WiFi available at most places now. Inconvenient, but not money you “Have” to spend.
quote:
Cable/Streaming Subscriptions - Again easily $100 a month more for a family as opposed to old school basic cable or even free over the air TV
Want. Not need.
quote:
Music Streaming Subscriptions - $10 a month for minimal streaming. The old school radio was free and we had to enjoy what was on when it was on or change the station.
Want. Not need.

Travel - When I was a kid we took one MAYBE two vacations in a year...now families go on 3-4-5+ vacations in a year easily. That's thousands of dollars more.
Want. Not need.
quote:
Eating out Vs Cooking at home - Eating out was a special occasion growing up. Now cooking at home has become the unique special occasion. Again easily thousands of dollars a year more.
Want. Not need.
