Do you go to the zoo? Would you like to see it moved or improved or both?

Seeking to boost attendance at BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo and the impact the zoo has on the region, park system officials are mulling over a $110 million upgrade that could include moving it to a different location.
BREC officials caution that no decisions have been made yet and say they don’t plan on seeking a tax increase to finance whatever long-overdue upgrades are ultimately made at the zoo.
“We are open to possibilities,” BREC Superintendent Carolyn McKnight said.
Friends of the Baton Rouge Zoo, a citizens group that supports the zoo, hired a consulting firm to examine ways the facility could be improved. The consultants made several recommendations, including the possible relocation.
While many of the public officials and community, business and philanthropic leaders interviewed by the consultants said they thought it would be a good idea to move the zoo from its relatively remote location near Baker, others said they thought that was unlikely to happen.

I would like to see it closer to the new St. George area of town.

I am all for improving the BR zoo, and I dont have a problem with my tax dollars going to the zoo to do so. Let's be honest though, it's an area of town that is slowly dying. I would be all for the zoo moving as well.

I endorse this message.

Move it closer to LSU/Downtown.

Would be amazing to have the zoo somewhere in BR or at least closer.

Where is there enough land around LSU or Downtown for something the size of the zoo?

I think they should move it along Nicholson between LSU and Lauberge

Keep in mind, the zoo is currently sitting on about 70 acres of land, they'd probably need at least 100 acres for an appropriate expansion.

Not a bad idea. Doesn't LSU own all of the property around there? Maybe BREC could purchase it from LSU. BREC could build a zoo and LSU could finish their Nutrition Center (which may have been restarted, but I can't recall).

FWIW, I used to enjoy going to the BR zoo. Nowadays I'm disgusted at the way they've let it go to shite. I feel for those animals. They need to bulldoze it and start over from scratch somewhere else

Well if my tax dollars can't go towards a loop then a zoo is as good as anything

They need to move it or do away with it.

I enjoy the Zoo and find that the zoo membership is a good value if you have kids.
With that said I do think relocating/upgrading the zoo wouldn't be a bad idea if possible.

Close the zoo and use that $110,000,000 for something BR actually needs.

Location Options:
(1) Along the river between downtown and L'auberge. Bonus: If the levee ever breaks there will be a real life Noah's Arc scenario for animal rescue, tons of National news coverage.
(2) Demolish existing structures on streets named after presidents between downtown and LSU. Bonus: Zoo gets extra visitors when mistaken travelers take the new "Washington St/BR Zoo" exit thinking that there is no way that I-10 drops down to one lane right there.
(3) Burbank between LSU and Bluebonnet - in lieu of creating 5 miles straight of apartment/condo/housing complexes with nothing in between.

there is plenty of land around the BR area for a nice sized zoo. the current zoo in BR is actually really big acreage wise. they could do with about 50-60% of the current size land they use now and still have a very legit zoo
