Anyone notice that the Advocate's paywall is getting stronger or they are targeting certain stories now for only subscribers.

I noticed that my usual trick of switching to incognito mode for an article kept bouncing to a subscriber login page.

Does anyone have similar issues with the Advocate website now?

You would think a news site that believes in open borders for immigrants would not believe in a paywall.

I've noticed it too. Now I just peruse the headlines and if there is a story I want to read, I run web searches to get the information on another site. No way I'm paying for that rag or contributing to the coffers of the guy who owns it.

Well good news... You’ve got tigerdroppings. We’re all collectively the reason the Advocate made the desperation move for a paywall in the first place, and will ultimately be the reason they eventually fade away.

My prediction: Eventually Chicken will buy their url for pennies on the dollar and it’ll redirect here.

Finding a cached page gets you past almost any paywall... It is a basic text format but you can read it.

You actually go to the advocate for news?

No I just look at the headlines, and if something catches my eye or the OT sleuths missed I would right click and open in incognito mode. It would work on most articles, but some articles now it wouldn’t.

Our local rag, the Houma Courier, started this a few months ago, but they would identify which articles were locked for subscribers.

I wouldn’t mind subscribing to the local paper, but they changed their business model so much because of changes in national ownership that I would not be willing to freely pay into their game.

A few months ago, I read about their parent company and thought the old New York Times ownership of them was bad, but when Gatehouse bought them it was all down hill. They don’t even own their own publishing press anymore and over the years they sold their properties. At one point, I even heard they went down to a single reporter covering the bayou area for two newspapers. So why should I support a business that cares so little about our area and is currently being kept afloat by state mandated legal notices because they may be the official legal paper of record for an area, and advertisers that still believe people read the physical copy of the newspaper or are forced by their advertising agencies to do so.

Luckily, in the Bayou area there are 2 other local papers that are free, the Times of Houma and the Lafourche Gazette for down the Bayou stuff and to a lesser extent HTV. Of course there is also Facebook and groups that beat everyone to the punch including the media.
