Backstory:
- Family and I are planning to relocate to a city that will offer us a much better overall lifestyle.
- Current job is a pure management/supervisor role with about 10% project-specific work (if I decide not to pass the work to someone on my team)
- Current job will not carry over to the new city
- Have one job offer in the new city with a great company, similar industry to my current job, perfect location, positive outlook in terms of career growth and advancement, etc. (everything you'd want out of a new job)
- One catch: it's a step back in terms of position/role/responsibilities; It will be 75% project-specific work and 25% overhead/management/reporting work; I'll have no direct reports; Salary is slightly less but not significant enough to make a huge difference.

Asking for thoughts on taking a step back in career path if it ultimately leads to moving somewhere you know you will enjoy.

My dad used to tell me "It's better to be at the bottom of a ladder you want to climb than half way up one you don't". I say do it.

I have considered a similar move. Honestly, if it is with a good organization, with a reasonable rate of advancement and the pay for a lateral or lesser position is near what you are doing now, the move sounds like a good one. Just know the first couple of years wont be ideal but the future positions/responsibility are the goal. If the new location is right for you and your family sounds worth it to me.

I did it.

It can be challenging, but if you want to move somewhere else I wouldn't be afraid to do it. I'm glad I did, even though I enjoyed the work I was doing in LA more.

I've done it. Honestly one of the better decisions I've ever made. I was an Estimator and liked what I did but I didn't get outside enough and I wasn't a fan of my coworkers. I was offered the job of a Asst superintendent with another company but the pay went from 70 to 60. I made the move and I love my job. I've actually moved up to a superintendent after a year and now make more than I did in previous position. I'm outside constantly and have much more freedom.

The grass isn't always greener, but sometimes it is.

It's not a ladder, it's a climbing wall, little step down for a step up is acceptable.

I will say I made a similar move and went for the better pay and opportunity. I made a mistake. I could have still went with great opportunity a little lesser pay, but lived in a location and lifestyle that would have been significantly better.

You will be much more successful in a situation where you have a happy life for you and your family. Take that for what it is worth.

I appreciate all of the honest responses.

Real-life experiences coming from people help the most. And these responses are more or less confirming the thoughts/feelings I've been having.
