And once they make it prevalent for college kids to walk around campus and in classrooms toting handguns, I can see these type of accidents happening regularly:

"I don't know what happened officer, I must have forgotten to put the safety on."
"It was an accident officer, I was checking to make sure my gun was loaded and I accidentally squeezed the trigger."
"Well officer, I just lost it when my exam grade came back and my a-hole professor gave me a C-."

No such thing. It’s negligence.
I’m well aware of this teaching point in firearms training classes, but it’s just that, a teaching point, and not something that is useful for general discussion or considerations of intent.
For the average person, or LEO, or prosecutor, or juror in a criminal court setting, the shooting was accidental if there was no intent to shoot.
Also, as a firearms instructor, the point we try to convey with the accident vs. negligence teaching point is that as a carrier of a firearm, you have a responsibility to repeatedly train proper technique so as to avoid negligent discharge. AND that you will be held civilly liable for any negligence.
