I believe the Trane units are still made by Trane in Tyler, Texas. I'd expect 7-8k for your typical ranch house 2500 square feet.

Correct...Trane, American Standard and AmeriStar (Trane builder unit.)

You need a new contractor. Compressors just don't fail and York doesn't make compressors. Whenever you see multiple compressor failures quickly...2 or more, then you have an installation issue causing the failures. Find a real contractor that will source the issue that's killing the compressor. Doesn't matter if you had a Rheem or another brand condenser. The system installation would kill the compressor in those, too. All of these use the same compressor manufacturer.

That actually makes me feel better a bit. I have a great contractor now that did not do the original work on this unit but he was going to install an expansion valve, which the original contractor did as part of the warranty claim, which hopefully will help. If anything else goes wrong, I am using the new guy which has already proven himself to me with two other jobs I have seen first hand.

You're welcome. I build equipment and coils for all of the air conditioning manufacturers. The founder of our company was the first person to ever install air conditioning on residential home. I'm good friends with all of the c-level folks with at every major manufacturer and we test everyone's equipment. I know who's building the best and who isn't. By the way, it doesn't matter how good the equipment if the equipment is installed improperly.
