about 20 seconds after cutting on the AC, I hear something attempt to start up in the attic air handler unit and it just starts a miserable high pitch whine.... Of course I'm about to buy a new roof next week, shoulda known.... what am I looking at ?

sounds to me like a bearing in the fan has gone out....is there any air at all blowing out of the vents? is the unit outside running?

My bet as well. If the inside fan is not pushing air, definitely turn the whole unit off. A non-functioning air handler( inside unit ) can frick up the compressor ( outside unit ).

Sounds like you have cats up there getting freaky, better smoke them out.

Take the filter out, and stick your head up in the return air duct with a flashlight. Look for ice on the coils. If there's ice, get a blow dryer and thaw it all out.

Several possibilities. Start with checking air filter. Then check for dirty coils. Also check for blocked drain pipe. If you've never cleaned those coils, it probably needs it regardless. Could also be refrigerant leak. It could be repaired, but probably better off replacing the system if there is no warranty, especially if system is at least 10yrs old. replacement is probably 5K or more.
If coils are dirty, they make a product that you can spray onto the coils to clean them. It drains out through the regular drain pipe.

That's probably it. It's all ball bearings these days.

sounds like a fan. actually shouldn't be that bad.

Mine would ice up several times a year. I sprayed it down with coil cleaner, and it would happen less often.
It also had a slow freon leak and would ice up when low on freon.
I saved up and eventually replaced the unit.

They sell a really good leak sealer now. For most leaks it works great and it's like $49. You see it in all the appliance stores, they all sell it. It's not a permanent fix but it does work. But yes, saving up and getting the newer more efficient answer is the best thing to do. Compressors have gotten much more energy efficient.

Leak stop additives were a four letter word at the last few properties ive worked at. Had a nasty habit of killing compressors. I'm glad to hear they are better engineered these days.

Mine did the same noise. New motor fixed everthing.
If so, you looking at about at least $500.00 to replace.

Tell your wife to get out of the attic.
