What is the purpose of LinkedIn? Is it just to show off how "successful" you are or is it actually helpful in making job connections and finding work? I joined it and almost immediately deleted my account because I didn't see the point.

A lot of job posting are there now, and you can now apply to a lot of jobs via your linkedin profile. It's a much better resource than indeed or any of those other websites.

I use it all of the time. I am in sales and I cover 1/2 of the US. I use it to find contacts in organizations. I can see if we know any of the same people, so I can ask my contacts for an introduction.
Also, I get approached for a ton of job opportunities from LinkedIn.
May just depend on your job. Everyone is on LinkedIn in what I do.
