A few questions for the home standby generator experts of the OT

In the process of receiving quotes for standby generator for my soon to be completed house.
Currently looking at Generac and Kohler generators. Because of the square footage of my house I anticipate a liquid cooled model.
What has been OT's experience with either model on value, reliability and noise level.
Also, when purchasing, is it better to go with an electrician who is an authorized dealer or a company whose business only deals with selling and servicing generators?

I have a Generac. Got my own plumber and electrican. You don't need one that will run your hole house. Figure out how much you will need to run then buy accordingly.

almost all Kohler commercial series motors which would be the Kohler Command have head gasket issues early and often

I wouldn't buy through Home Depot etc. I work for an electrical contractor and we aren't an authorized Dealer, but our suppliers are. We have installed Generac and a few Kohlers. Definitely get liquid cooled. The only Kohlers we have installed have been 30kw+. Generac makes a good product, just stay away from the big box store version.

We have a generac. the thing works like a charm. kicks right on when the power goes out. powers the entire house.

How big is your house?
More often than not liquid-cooled are overkill.

You will need one big enough to run your entire house if you are going to install an automatic transfer switch.

I don't think they come w/ the little GM four anymore.

Air cooled are noisy as hell, keep that in mind.

I have a Generac 20 KW natural gas standby with an automatic transfer switch and I love it. I had it installed by the electrician who wired my house during construction so I didn't have to retrofit anything. You will need to have a higher capacity gas meter installed and make sure you have adequate gas volume piped into the unit no matter the size.
I run a 4 ton and 2 ton a/c units along with normal loads. So far no problems. I have it serviced yearly and make sure that it exercises weekly.
My total house size is 2600 living plus my man cave and shed which add another 400 sq feet.
My advice is to get more than you think you need and don't cut corners on installation and maintenance.

I had one on my previous house and with a well insulated house and even with the generator being basically 2' from it, I barely noticed it when it was running.
