No the artist, venue and promotion company produce tickets. Scalpers leach off their efforts.

The person that didn't know the tickets were going on sale today and couldn't get any. When such person realizes Adele is coming to a city near him can now get tickets, that he couldn't do such if it wasn't for someone selling them.
Stop using the word scalper, ticket broker is more like it

What do people think of the folks who stand in line for the midnight release of a new product with anticipated shortages (console, iphone, etc.) to sell it for double on eBay?

If the market price was face, there would be no arbitrage opportunities.
There is as soon as the scalpers bought the tickets and created supply shortage.

at least the scalpers buy them to resell to those people who want to go bad enough they'll pay a premium.
without scalpers, only those who happened to be online at the exact second they went on sale could go.
now anyone can go
here's to scalpers
You're doing mental gymnastics to justify shitty behavior.
Without scalpers, the only people hitting refresh would be people wanting to go. It's not that everyone can go now, the same number of people can go. The only difference is you got a piece of a pie that you didn't work for.

But that's how it's supposed to work. If not for the scalpers, there'd be more tickets available for people to buy at face value when they go on sale...!

There could still be a market for late ticket buying without scalpers. This is a weak argument.

i have no problem with it.
sometimes, game doesnt sell out and they are SOL with unsellable stock.
somtimes the gamble pays off.
how is this different than any other transaction?

dude, have you ever been to a sporting event where the 'scalpers' dump their remaining tickets in the trash after not being able to sell all of them?
its risk vs reward and its as much a gamble for them to sell these as for you to bitch that you would have made it in that .004 milisecond window to have purchased the tickets if it wasn't for those 'damn dirty scalpers'.
stop whining

OK, imagine if everyone quit scalping today. If every body just decided it was shitty and they'd all stop, who would be upset? No one, absolutely nobody.
in soviet russia, all citizens get equal access to concerts.

I understand that they're taking a risk. If they lose then the tickets go to waste, if they win then someone loses money paying more than they should for a ticket. So in one situation it's good for the scalper and the other is bad but in both situations everyone except the scalper is worse off.
So how does society benefit from this? And if society doesn't benefit then he's a non contributing leach.

I paid 22 dollars to see him in bham next month.

Yeah I'm a big old commie cause I don't applaud a-hole selfish behavior.
*quick disclaimer, still like you cad. But it's a fun argument to pass some time on this worthless work day. But I really do hate the act of scalping

Which is my exact point with the Greatful Dead. Your bitch here shouldn't be with the scalpers; but your beloved artiste, Adele.

i understand your point and reaction, i do.
just trying to point out they actually do spend money & time to try & make a profit from tickets they sell for no other reason than to make money.
serious question lucas - is this any different than say a 'house flipper' who buys a foreclosure or cheap house and then fixes it up and sells it for thousands or HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS more than they bought it for?
you could argue the person buying the house overpaid and kept a more deserving person from buying it because they couldn't afford the updated house so the house 'flipper' took away their opportunity to buy it.

I got hooked up by a scalper with awesome seats to the US women's game last night. 24 rows up, right on midfield. Couldn't ask for a better view. $80 for what would have cost $200 from ticketmaster.
I'm glad you got to see the door slam on Abby's arse on the way out.

You leave her out of this you son of a bitch.
But I do agree artists could do more to prevent this bullshite. I'm currently looking at stub hub for Tool tickets. I did the math and one in eight of all the tickets sold is currently on sale on just that site. I love that so many greedy assholes are gonna eat the cost or at least take a hit for being a shitty person. Hopefully the price plummets before the actual show cause they're pretty ridiculous right now.

There's a few problems with the comparison but the obvious one is bolded.
Also there's more risk in the housing market and a real investment. I'm not saying that house flipping is some noble endeavor that we as a society should hold in high regard, but it's nowhere near the bottom drudges among scalpers and backpage pimps (although in fairness the pimps actually do provide security so that's not quite applicable).
