That's a US Tank Destroyer. The difference between it and a tank is that the tank would have a closed-in turret.
The Tank Destroyer has an OPEN-TOPPED turret -- absolutely open to the clean air, the sun and rain, etc.
As such, Tank Destroyers are VERY vulnerable to enemy infantry in close terrain. Any enemy soldier with a good arm could throw a grenade right in your lap as you sit in your open-topped turret.

Really moves one almost to tears to read that.
What rotten luck -- to be hit by a stray shell like that.
Brave man.

Wow. Reading that made me a bit misty, I must admit. What a man Sgt Hughes must have been. That this country produced so many like him and my Uncle Johnny and Uncle Rip was a miracle in itself. Vive La France and God bless America!

Crazy to think about.
You grow up hearing these old stories all your life, so the people of these stories feel so much older than you, when in reality you've lived many years or even decades longer and they seem so much more brave when you put yourself in the same position
My father talks about being a 5 or 6 year old and his uncle coming to visit him while on leave. He gave him some of his Army paraphernalia, and played with him. My father will turn 82 this year, and that's the last memory he has of his uncle.
Sorry...just got a little dust in my eye.

Hi, My name is Christopher Brennan and I am a reporter based in Paris, France. I was in Mitry Mory and came across the memorial to your great uncle. I Googled his name and found this post. It is a very interesting story and it would be great to talk to you about it if you have time soon. I also am planning on talking to people in Mitry Mory to learn more about the mayor. Feel free to email me at christopherbrennan13@gmail.com
All the best,
Christopher

Always good to see their sacrifices remembered. Sad that the youngsters these days get only some general historical facts and very little of the stories of personal heroics by some many thousands. Thanks for sharing.

On another note: great model skills there, Darth. And I thought the only models you noticed were the NSFW kind. I built only one tank, a Tiger, but most of the WWII aircraft and ships.
