Six Cleveland police officers have been fired in connection with a November 2012 car chase that ended with officers firing 137 bullets at a car, killing Timothy Russell and Malissa Williams, said Detective Steve Loomis, president of the Cleveland Police Patrolmen's Association.

Brelo, the only officer indicted in the incident, allegedly fired 49 of the shots, including 15 from the hood of the car carrying Russell and Williams. He was acquitted of manslaughter and felonious assault last year.

As for the 105 officers involved in the pursuit, 63 were suspended for between one and 10 days, he said.

What happened that night?
The chase started the night of November 29, 2012, when a couple in a car sped away from an undercover officer. Their engine backfired, sputtering and producing a loud bang in the tailpipe. Prosecutors said officers mistook the noise for gunshots, and a high-speed chase ensued.

Investigators said as many as 62 police cars joined at speeds of up to 100 mph through the streets of Cleveland.

They should be in a prison cell. There should be a new show- ."How to get away with Murder- the thin blue line". Since it happens so much.

Not always true. cop can shoot you when you comply 100%, even for a phantom no seat belt stop.

They didn't break the law. Their car backfired.

Did I misread that they sped away from a undercover cop?

The article is worded poorly. No car chase has ever ensued after a tailpipe backfires. The backfire heightened the stakes of the chase, but the couple were running away from the cops in the first place.

I wouldn't stop for an undercover cop either. Neither should you.

Duh. You might run from an undercover cop too. They may have thought he was trying to carjack them.

Why in the hell would 62 police cars be needed to pursue 1 vehicle? Christ, LE is nonsensical. They think they're military, and that's a huge problem, especially considering the low benchmark set to get a job as LE.

The fact these things happen when someone breaks the law is the issue. It's as if there is zero restraint by a lot of LE.
