Before you start it for the first time, pull the spark plug out and pour about 1/4 of an ounce of Marvel Mystery Oil into the spark plug hole. That will keep that piston and rings from scraping metal on metal before the motor starts to lubricate it.
Some of the deaths you hear from carbon monoxide poisoning actually comes from generators running OUTSIDE of the house, but too close to the house. Make sure to point the exhaust away from the house and get a carbon monoxide detector

I don’t know how large a generator you are talking about or what you plan to run with it....but prepare for a pain in the arse. You need a shite load of gas cans and you need to foll them up before the hurricane. My generator burns 5 gal every 12 hours, so I have to fill it morning and night.
If you expect power to go off for a number of days, you might also want to buy one or two small window units or some fans. If you buy window units, be sure to get 110 Volt type.
Also, don’t forget to buy a shitload of extension cords and a power strip or two.
as to your original question, be sure you have oil for the generator, and be sure to run it out of fuel before you store it.
