A 4-year-old isn’t going to have a clue.

Gun safety has been pounded into my nephews head since he was three. He is now 12. He started going hunting with his grandpa at 3. Him and his brother were aware their grandpa kept a gun in his truck. When the younger brother was 3 or 4, I remember him saying "my papa got a gun in his truck. We can't get to it, but if anyone even looks for it they going to be in some trouble". He was repeating what he was told and he was shaking his finger so I am pretty sure kids that age can absolutely understand.

Their grandpa's gun is a revolver which doesn't have a safety on it, but when it comes to kids and guns you can't ever say "they will not get to it there".. You can't make any assumptions. Even if you keep it locked in the glove compartment when they are in the truck.. its hard to have eyes on them non stop, even if its for a split second with it doesn't take long for them to get into something, but its better to tell them its in there, they should never touch it... even if they can't than not tell them at all..

I would be shocked if a DA brought charges against the father to a grand jury under these circumstances.

Prepare to be shocked and then check the Advocate website. The DA has ordered an investigation so he can take this to a Grand Jury.

I've seen people recommend Vaultek stuff for something portable.
