HMM164(C) flying CH-53Es on the USS Okinawa.
Had left the west coast earlier in the year for a normal WesPac deployment when Saddam invaded. Our amphib group were some of the first boats in the Gulf.

I remember seeing countless (well, countable, but a lot) of B-52s taking off from barksdale from the bus stop in 7th grade.
This happened every day, but they usually circled and landed. These kept flying and were pounding iraq that night.
This. The war all started with this crew flying something like a 35 hour mission.

People were still afraid of the draft then. It was different times.

Damn. On one hand it doesn't seem like it's been 25 years. But now that I sit back and think about it, it does seem like a lifetime ago.

It was a show of force to the rest of the world that we won the arms race. Was an opportunity for us to hone combined military tactics with modern weaponry as well. There were some real benefits to that war for the USA.
That's a terrible reason to go to war

We are still paying for that war.
I agree here to a point...

Did such a shitty job, we had to go back 10 years later

Strongly disagree here... People over there need to fend for themselves at sone point........ The one thing that going back hurt was what happened on 9/11...
