I'd put money on it that someone has forgot about their hitch, dropped the tailgate to use the step and wham. Nice new dented tailgate.

I'm not sure about Sierra's, but the 5.4 in my 2005 F-150 was not even close to the one that was in my 2010. I'm sure GMC made some tweaks along the way.

What advantages do the new ones have besides a new body style? My research has yielded very little. Both have 5.3 and 6.2 Motors. Does the 2019 have a 10 speed?

The infotainment system to me is much more improved in 2019 compared to previous models. I have a 2017 1500 Sierra and I think the GMC Intellelink interface is pretty much hot garbage. Not the worst thing but at least it supports Android Auto and Apple Car Play (from 2016 on anyways). The newer 2019s have a revamped interface and it looks much better at least what I've seen on reviews on Youtube.

Have a 2019 6.2/10 spd Denali. Besides having every possible option available , including the 6 way tailgate, the truck has the largest backseat area I’ve ever seen on a vehicle. Love it!

How durable will that thing be in heavy use?

Mine has an 8 speed. Sits higher, rides smoother, and has much more rear legroom. Plus the tailgate is really handy. Just don't leave your trailer hitch in and break it down.
