Was there a specific point you realized that that y'all were completely unprepared (underprepared) maybe overwhelmed by the situation?

The Guard guys were pretty cool, when the media was whining about having military at the shelter, the narrative was they were just there for "visual deterrent" and weren't actually armed. The rifles were just a part of the attire. One late night when I couldn't sleep, I was shooting the shite with some of the guys and asked if that was true, he just smiled and detached his mag. I didn't tell a soul.
There were maybe 100 guns with ammo at the dome until late Wednesday or early Thursday.
I didn't even have fingernail clippers. I said, "If y'all ever call me for something like this again, don't search my bags for unauthorized, privately-owned weapons."

Tuesday, near dark, the word went out, "Get your shite out of the Superdome. We're setting up a perimeter in the parking lot.". I didnt feel better at all until resources started flowing in on Thursday.

You guys had something set up in East Bank somewhere, I only went a couple times, they let us in with our Red Cross badges, food was great and watching football was a riot. They just told us to be out before dark, otherwise we needed an escort.

That must have been later. September or October? I was working out of Carville for September. I went back to working in the City in October.

Did you get to meet Chris Kyle or did you have to stay off the roof?

Cool video. That must have been hell to be stuck there for 8 days.

Negative knowledge (FTR I like Chris Kyle)

Yea it was later, initially they wouldn't let us go to New Orleans, unless assigned. One night a couple volunteers came back to the shelter who were assigned, law enforcement volunteers, and were immediately referred to mental health. Probably second week in September, rumor was they were at one of the temp morgues, one lady came back ghost white and clearly f'd up. I'll never forget her face.

Are the stories in the book "The Great Gun Grab" true?

None. There was looting by National Guard troops, but that was later, November or December.
Had a buddy in the guard that was setup where the Hornets practiced.
He got me Speedy Claxtons actual shoes. Only size that would fit me.

I did not witness, directly, anything like that. I was not aware of anything except through the same media sources you saw them in.

Were you worried when Rita came through? Our people were shitting bricks. Everyone was talking about Katrina 2.0, I had never seen so much rain in my life, by then I was staff shelter logistics, had a fleet of box trucks, and requests for supplies were coming in from everywhere, because Katrina 2.0

We pranked the chief of staff by photoshopping Rita coming right at us in Carville for a briefing
Good times ...

You tap any of our volunteers or any of the NCCC's. The busy bee males (NCCC) were some of the worst blockers down there.

Wow. That’s some video! You know, I’ve never heard anything of LSU and Katrina. I did see the horrific Charity and Memorial documentaries. And had a
Chaplain friend stuck at Charity during time. Thank you for sharing it and glad you and the others made it out safely.

Evacuating LSUHSC
That’s really really good footage.
Thanks.

Please send that my way if you ever find a way. Not being from the area and living here now, I have a curiosity of matching what the city looked like Pre/During/After

It was a wild time, work hard, play hard. Met a lot of cool people from all over the world. Kiwi police officer, Redondo Beach fire chief, a judge from New York.
Recovered sat phones, watched a police officer load some of our stuff into squad car in Houma, I wasn't going to tell him no.
Wish I remembered the name of the restaurant that had live catfish tanks, they would clean them on the wall and fry them up. Food was cheap then, like 6-7 bucks for more than you could finish. Catfish etouffee, red beans and rice, was able to get soft shell crabs once, they were ok.
