Short sleeves were nonexistent in that era. It was always long sleeve shirts, and usually a jacket or other outer garment, regardless of the temperature. They also wore wool longjohns year round, which isn't as crazy as it sounds. The sweat had an evaporative cooling effect.
Needless to say, people also stank to high heaven.
BTW, Lincoln, NM is in the mountains, and the humidity is very low. Nights are cold, and even during a summer day, it can be coolish in a shady spot.
ETA: Lincoln is a very well preserved town, and events of that time are very well documented. If they can identify the location and identify some of the other people, and it meshes with the date of the wedding, that's pretty conclusive.

People also didn't have sunscreen back then, and if you are in the a desert where you are out in the elements a lot it is better to wear clothes to absorb the sweat and keep you cool, along with keeping the sun at bay.
Not to mention, it was a wedding during a time where people dressed up even more than they do now for stuff like that.

It was considered uncivilized to be armed at an event like a wedding. If they were among friends, there may have been no need. And there may have been lookouts.
As for the law, they were the law, at least one faction of it. It was a free for all at that time. Both sides of the Lincoln County War claimed to have been deputized and to have legal authority. Billy received an amnesty from the governor shortly after this in exchange for testifying against some of the other Regulators. He lived quietly for a few months, then went back to his outlaw ways. Two years later, Pat Garret was elected sheriff (he grew up near Haynesville, LA, BTW) and the rest is history.

Just watched the documentary on this. Great story. Amazing how they were able to trace the exact location where the photo was taken.

Considering it was less than a mile from Tunstall's house, how hard could it have been? But still, the documentary did a pretty good job of showing how they went about trying to authenticate the photograph. I think it is awesome that the guy pays $2 for something that could be worth millions. On a side note, I still haven't found my copy of the Declaration on the Dunlap broadside.

Yeah, outside of CMT you don't really see cowboys wearing short sleeves. I imagine back in those days you didn't wear short sleeves unless you were indoors or swimming. I don't recall seeing any polo shirts on Deadwood either.
