My grandfather was on the hornet. Interviewed him for a report back in grade school and recently found it, pretty interesting and glad I never got rid of it.

The B-25 Mitchell is one fine looking airplane.

It might be effective to scan the original and post it as an image.

Was he on the Hornet at Midway or Santa Cruz Islands?

He was on it from Norfolk to the abandon ship order at Santa Cruz.

Unfortunately this report is all the info I got from him. I think he tried to memorialize more of it as he got older but pretty sure his whore wife got rid of all that.

Sad to hear someone would get rid of memories and oral histories like your grandfather had.

I am sure you are proud of your grandfather's contributions to fighting the Japs in WWII.

Images fixed.

My wedding band is the same one my grandmother gave him when they got married in 1941 and he wore throughout the war. It’s pretty incredible to think about the places it’s been.

Thanks so much for posting that. It's a great tribute to your grandfather and the other men who carried out that mission.

I’ve got his old footlocker I believe is from his time on PT boats. I tried unsuccessfully to donate it to the WW2 museum a while back. I guess footlockers are a dime a dozen to them.

The WWII Museum gets offered a huge amount of personal items and even awards. They can't display everything.

A friend's father was on a Jedburgh team (OSS) in WWII. He parachuted into occupied France AND China.

After he died, his daughter thought it would be nice to his items on display in the city he lived in and offered them to the WWII Museum. Among the items offered were his Silver Star, Purple Heart, a silk "escape" map, and others memorabilia. They'd take it, but wouldn't guarantee it would ever be displayed. She passed on that offer.

That’s awesome. Props to your granddad. The Hornet saw a ton of action early on in the Pacific. I’d love to read what he he had to say. I’m guessing he was a part of her her crew when she went down at the Battle of Santa Cruz?

ETS: I see you’ve already posted it. Thanks!
