I recently got on a Delta flight from ATL to MSY and some guy got on with a parachute and put it in the overhead. Everyone just looked around like "does this guy know something?"
As far as skydiving, had a very close friend who got into it. In her first forty jumps, the had TWO main chute failures. Had to cut away and go to Reserve both times. After the second one, her instructor sat her down and said "you are a statistical anomaly and should give this up." She sold her stuff and went on about life. A couple of years later she was killed by a fire truck that ran her over while it was responding to a car accident in which she was involved.
