World War I was going into it’s second year. Trenches stretched from the Belgian coast to the Swiss frontier. Millions had died already. But up to this point other than minor scirmishes, the war at sea had been uneventful comparatively speaking. This despite both Great Britian and the German Empire both having massive fleets of the, at that time, most powerful weapon of war the world had ever seen, the dreadnaught. Germany was already feeling the effects at home of the blockade by the British Grand Fleet. But up until now, the Kiaser has been loathe to risk his prized High Seas Fleet in a general action against the British. All that changed on May 31, 1916.

It was on this day, 102 years ago that the German High Seas Fleet with 16 battleships, 5 battlecruisers, 6 pre-dreadnaughts, 11 light cruisers, and 61 torpedo boats sortied to meet the 28 battleships, 9 battlecruisers, 8 armored cruisers, 26 light cruisers, 78 destroyers, and 1 mine layer of the British Grand Fleet in what would go down in history as the last major naval fleet engagememt fought primarily with battleships. Today, we know this engagement as The Battle of Jutland.

I never realized the battle was fought in water shallow enough for divers to reach the wrecks. I always figured thr sea would be deeper there.

Battle of Jutland by Montague Dawson

This was published in the April 1949 National Geographic

What you see is the Imperial German High Seas Fleet performing an emergency high speed battle turn where all the ships turned at once rather than in a column

It was said that the North Sea eel fishery had a banner season after Jutland, due to the abundance of bodies for the eels to scavenge.

Lost. Sort of. Even though they inflicted heavier losses on the British than the British inflicted on them, they failed to achieve their ultimate goal of breaking the blockade. In the end, Jutland ended up being nothing more than a last hurrah for the age of the big guns.

In the final weeks of the war the German High Seas Fleet was ordered to put it sea in a last throw of the dice desperation battle against the Grand Fleet. But before it could put to sea sailors mutinied. The mutiny spread around Kiel to sailors and soldiers around the port and eventually around other northern Gemran ports and cities. For a while it looked that Germany was going to have its own Communist Revolution much like had brought down the Russian Empire.
