The man accused of killing a University of Mississippi student in a 2022 hit-and-run pleaded guilty Monday, the day his trial was set to begin.  Seth Garron Rokitka, of Collierville, TN, pleaded guilty to aggravated DUI and leaving the scene of an accident with injuries.  He was sentenced by Circuit Court Judge Kent Smith on Tuesday to 10 years in prison on the leaving the scene of an accident charge and five years on the aggravated DUI charge; however, those five years were suspended. He will serve 10 years, followed by five years of probation.

Walker Fielder was a Jr at Ole Miss walking home with his date on the night of his 21st birthday. They were crossing through Oxford City Hall parking lot behind the Square when they were struck.

Rokitka fled the scene without calling 911. He and his buddies had driven down from Memphis and had been drinking on the Square for approximately 12 hours. It was 17 minutes before someone spotted the victims in the parking lot and called for help.

Blanche survived with serious injuries. Walker died at the Oxford hospital.

He made one bad decision and ruined 3 lives.

Little surprised at the sentence.

Justice is only served if the DUI killer receives life without parole. He cost a life and still has his. More time was sentenced leaving scene than the death. What a judge.

Where are the years for vehicular homicide? All I see are 10 years for leaving the scene and five years of probation for DUI.

Vehicular manslaughter is 20 years. With an additional 5 years for a DUI aggravation. So it could have been 25 total.

The reason the DA and the family accepted a plea deal is because he was in a parking lot and operating at a reasonable speed when he hit them. That makes the "reckless disregard" part at least somewhat difficult to prove. There is a chance a jury would have found him not guilty of the Vehicular Manslaughter.

So they got the Max punishment on the two charges that were slam dunks. And saved the family the anguish of a trial.

That's just how the law was written. Seems odd, but that was what fit the facts.

What a judge.

The judge actually departed from the deal that the DA cut. The deal was for a 7 year and a 10 year sentence running concurrently.

The judge handed down 10 years and 5 years running consecutively. And then suspended the 5. So basically the same thing except he has the 5 years hanging over him if he screws up again. Which is a departure from what the DA was gonna allow.
