? about preparing for storm

I am originally from Alabama. this will be my first big storm since moving to br area.
the place I have has a garage door but only a half wall where i park my vehicle.
is it best to leave garage door open so that if a gust of wind comes from backside it doesn’t rip my garage door off? or close it?
i would think by closing it the door would give resistance which might not be a good thing here?

also how far away is truly needed for generator? again I have open garage but where I plan to put my generator is on my back patio area.
i have the exhaust vented outward to wide open but it is technically under my patio area and my ceiling for patio is siding with little holes in them.
surely this is enough wide open space? or do I say frick it and move generator out even more away from underneath patio covering and allow it to get wet and then run my extension cords?

Open. I think you are good with placement. Just not near an open window. Get a carbon Monoxide detector. There are plug in kinds. Same spot you get smoke detectors in a store.

I mean this probably goes without saying but don't start your gen when you first lose electricity during the teeth of the winds and rain. I'm assuming when you say "wet" you mean the residual stuff well after the major stuff has passed? What you described under the patio and exhaust pointed away in open area is what you want, minimum 5 feet gen from house.

Good point.
Make sure your muffler exhaust is pointing AWAY from the house and any other combustible materials.
Do not refill with gas while running OR until it cools off. Gasoline can ignite off the hot parts of the engine especially the muffler. Doesn’t need a flame. Enough heat will light it off. Happened to a friend of mine’s father while filling a lawnmower. Burns all over his arms.

When it comes to your generator, put it as far away as your cord will let you, and definitely not under the same roof as your house. It’s not just windows you have to worry about, it can also get in your eve vents and into your attic. I heard way too many stories after Laura of people waking up with CO poisoning and almost not making it, including a friend of mine. Regardless of which way you point the exhaust, you can be fine for a week or two and then the winds change and now it’s coming back to your house. For Laura, I ran mine for 43 nights, I put it in the middle of my yard as far the cord would allow, the rain and weather didn’t bother it.

Open your garage door. When the power goes out your generator may not have enough power to open it. And it’ll be hell to find someone to fix the door if it’s damaged after the storm. At the edge of the garage or patio like you said is fine. If you’re putting on the patio, I’d wait until the rain calms down before you stick it out there

It has similar power requirements of a refrigerator.

My guess would be to leave it full open, but you may get lots of water in.
Gotta weigh the water vs. wind decision
