Saints training camp observations: Brandon Coleman, Marshon Lattimore stand out

Friday’s Saints Training Camp session provided a little bit of everything, with the offense hitting some nice strides.

The Saints kicked off their second day of training camp open to the media on Friday, which gave us a better tempo than the first day. The team was without pads, but still generated some good moments. Here’s a few of my observations:

Attendance: Max Unger, Senio Kelemete, Terron Armstead, John Phillips, Damian Swann, and Devaroe Lawrence did not practice. No sign of Orlando Franklin at practice, but head coach Sean Payton did confirm in his post-practice presser that the team was adding him for offensive line depth.

Marshon Lattimore changed his jersey number from No. 34 to No. 23, and defensive back Dejaun Butler swapped from No. 33 to No. 34.

Starting defensive rotation again saw the linebacking corps of A.J. Klein (SAM), Manti Te’o (MIKE), and Stephone Anthony (WILL). The same faces appeared for the defensive line (Jordan-Rankins-Onyemata-Okafor) and secondary (P.J. Williams-Breaux-Vaccaro-Bell). Erik Harris also received some work with the first-team defense at the safety spot in place of Te’o.

The offensive line saw Ryan Ramczyk starting at left tackle once again, but Khalif Barnes did rotate in.

Getting kick return work today was Ted Ginn Jr., Tommylee Lewis, and Alvin Kamara. The Saints had several kickoff coverage lineups, but the main one consisted of Vaccaro, Coleman, Mauti, Robertson, Therize, Stupar, Lampman, Hendrickson, Banjo, and Bell.
Drew Brees went 5-for-5 in 7-on-7 drills, while Chase Daniel went 5-for-6. Brees dropped back six times, but was forced to run because of good defensive coverage. Daniel hit Daniel Lasco on a wheel route to open his reps for a deep gain, and also found Willie Snead near the sidelines for a good hookup. The only miss was a target to Josh Hill that was broken up by De’Vante Harris.

The offense hit stride, as Brees connected with Ginn on a deep route where P.J. Williams slipped, and three plays later he found Corey Fuller for a touchdown after he juggled the ball a bit. Fuller had Marcus Williams and Sterling Moore beat in coverage.

Garrett Grayson hit Jake Lampman on a deep route in which Alvin Kamara picked up a heavy blitzer.

Nickel sets for the Saints saw Klein and Anthony at linebacker, with Williams coming in as the third safety option. Brees hit Ginn Jr. deep left and Corey Fuller on a deep middle post play.

Stephone Anthony blew up a screen play to Alvin Kamara (Brees had a high snap) in which there would have been a big loss. Alex Okafor would have been credited with a sack on the very next play.

Obum Gwacham put together a stellar series once Daniel entered, getting Lasco for a loss on a screen play, and then having two back-to-back QB pressures.

Play of the day honors would likely go to Brandon Coleman, who beat Delvin Breaux in 1-on-1 coverage down the sideline for a 66-yard touchdown grab. Coleman had some impressive moments overall.

Marshon Lattimore had some good moments in practice again, forcing a fumble on Daniel Lasco, and he had a couple of good plays setting the edge. In some coverages, he was playing a good 9 yards off the receiver, but that didn’t seem to be an issue at all.

Adrian Peterson took a swing pass on the right side and put a good stiff arm on Kenny Vaccaro. He had some good runs out of the backfield, and is probably one of the most intriguing players to watch once the pads come on.
Camp will be open to fans tomorrow that reserved tickets, so be sure to get there early to find a good seat!
