I'm not going to post one of these long responses like Chad and Alejandro have done, but hell you can't argue with where the team is now since 1985 and where it was before he bought the team.

The ONLY point against that is the advent of NFL free agency. Free agency really changed the game, and allowed teams like the Saints to compete by paying for better players. There, back to Benson, is that he was willing to pay good players. You can't argue too much with that (sans Bobby Hebert, that was a mistake)

I think Saints fans would have a higher opinion of Benson if he were a more effective public speaker. He's horrible at press conferences, can't stick to a prepared statement, goes off on a tangent without ever making his point, and says things that tend to piss off the fan base. One of the best moves he could make is allowing Rita to be spokesperson for the team from now on.

That being said, and I hate to admit it, the only success the Saints have ever had has been under his ownership. And truth be told, we could be much worse off.

Two playoff wins in 25 years and a winning record against only two teams is success? (Also, I give Rita credit for the win over the Eagles)

Serioulsy, Tom Benson let plenty of players leave for more money and never brought in any big name free agents. (Joe Johnson, Willie Roaf, Pat Swilling, Sam Mills, Ricky Jackson, W. Tubbs, Q. Early, W. Walls, B. Hebert, Ironhead Heyward, etc. etc.) Anyone we brought in who was any good was either old, Jim Everrett, or wasn't a big player before coming here, J. Horn & LaRoy Glover. The only exception I can think about, excluding the last 4-5 years is Mike McKenzie. Besides him, who was our biggest FA signing, Norman Hand???

Tom Benson has always been about making his $$$ first and the team winning second.

aren't we 3rd in cap spending Suntiger?

he has spent money, and lost money by firing coaches that people liked when we brought them in. I don't like him because of Katrina, but he's a good owner. He certainly isn't near the worse like you rated him

The Steelers don't always bring in marquee free agents either. And sometimes its good business to not over pay for players to keep. We bitch when we keep and over pay and we bitch when we let the go and get over paid elsewhere.

Willie Roaf was let go as a courtesy.

This year. Like I said, Rita has taken over the team now so I pretty much give her credit for the last 4-5 years of change.
Historically, the Saints cap numbers go from high to low quite frequently. What have we gotten for the money is the question that should be asked?

The Steelers have won two of the last four Super Bowls and six overall. Let me know when we even get to a Super Bowl then we can compare the Saints to the Steelers. They won more playoff games last year then we've won in our history.

Like I said, Rita was getting worked in after Katrina (When Benson really showed his arse) and has steadily taken over since then. Rita >>>>>>> Benson so far.

Just look at the late 80's, 90's and early 2000's and you can see the change in ownership philosophy the last four years or so.

do u think that is more than any other owners? i mean shite, you are talking about a 20 year period pretty much.

Joe Johnson left and didnt do shite. That was a GREAT release. GREAT.

Roaf left for other reasons other than money.

Pat Swilling was TRADED. Not let go because of money.

Sam Mills was like 35 when the Saints cut ties with him.

Rickey Jackson played 12 seasons for the Saints and 2 for the 49'ers before retiring.

Quinn Early? please. Winfred Tubbs. Please.

at least do some fricking research before you say he let these guys go cause he was afraid to pay them.

Eric Allen
Sean Dawkins
Eddie Kennison
Ashley Ambrose
Jeff BLake
Grady Jackson

Dale Carter

Oh, that time period with 0 post season victories? Someone please define success for an NFL team because I'm apparently very about what makes a team successful.

62-33 record over 6 seasons with some tough playoff losses. I can live with that. You can't blame that on Benson.

None of those guys who left were on Benson. They were on the GM at the time. And half of them were the right call.

Only Roaf and Mills and Hebert were "big" mistakes.

The Saints have had plenty of big-money FA signings. Wally Williams, Eric Allen, Wayne Gandy, Jason David, Michael Haynes, etc.

Also lots of trades: Tebucky Jones, Jeremy Shockey, That QB from the Cowboys, Ricky Williams, etc.

Benson has NEVER put money over winning. He ate 3 years of Ditka's huge contract and hired a completely new staff to boot. Ditto for Haslett & Co. in 2005.

Tons of cheap owners would have kept both Ditka and Haslett around for at least another season to avoid wasting all that money. Like Shinn is doing with Byron right now.
