2) He's a bridge to the true Drew heir.
I get that, I was just hopeful that the heir would have a year sitting behind Brees. I know there’s a chance Brees could stick around for 21 but if he doesn’t and like you say Jameis does Jameis things then we’re starting from scratch with Brees gone.

if you were looking for someone to be groomed now, he was the most available asset with the most potential to do just that.
To me Rosen was a good option. Maybe we reached out and Miami wasn’t interested but I tend to doubt it would have taken a whole lot to get him.

Again, can't wrap my head around how this upsets people
Not upset, this is the only thread I’ve posted about it. Just pointing out why maybe some people aren’t as excited as some other options would have made them
I would have been much happier with Rosen, a guy with potential that has probably been handled worse than any other QB I can think of, is very young, costs nothing, and would likely have no issues sitting and waiting as long as Drew wants to play.
My ideal replacement would have been Dalton. I know paying him would have been more difficult to pull off, maybe impossible, I’ll leave that to the cap gurus, but I just think he’s a great fit in this system and has a lot more potential than he ever had a chance to show in Cincy

Voo I like you and all but with all due respect and I'm saying with this all due respect, that idea is fricking terrible. Its almost upsetting me you think Andy Dalton would be the ideal heir...ANDY DALTON

Thing about Rosen is he sucks. His situations haven't been ideal but he still has not flashed much potential either.
This is in all likelihood Drew's last season, if he happens to go down for a stretch again...who would you have more faith to keep us a few wins and keep us in line for home field...Josh Rosen or Jameis? This is another expensive insurance policy with the potential for more. Rosen would likely cost you a pick only to find out he does in fact suck and leave you in a lurch if called upon.
andy fricking dalton...Boy.....I just......

I hear ya baw. I always get shite when I mention that but I honestly think he’s better than he gets credit for. People just don’t want to root for a ginger

That’s very possible. I just think a guy that had so much potential but has had a different OC for what four or five straight years going back to college could surprise people in this environment.

Agreed it’s his last ride and yeah as a pure backup this year Jameis > Rosen for sure.
But again long term I’m more intrigued by what Payton could do with Rosen.

Don’t hate on the Red Rifle baw
Ima dig up an old post I’ve put here a few times on it
ETA: Boom, wish I could find one comparing him with Jaboo
Dalton would be the perfect reclamation project for Payton.
You think Dalton was turnover prone in Cincy?? Go take a look at Brees in SD. In his four years as a starter there he had INTs of 16, 15, 7, 15. And those numbers didn’t even go down significantly over the next 10 years. It wasn’t until 2017 that Drew really stopped turning the ball over at that clip.
As for Dalton regressing since 2016, well the team got worse and worse as well while they drove the Marv train into the ground. That was also the year the OC went from Jay Gruden/Hue Jackson to Ken Zampese/Bill Lazor, neither of which are in the league anymore.
If you don’t think working with Payton and Carmichael could do wonders for a guy that spent the early years of his career playing against elite Baltimore and Pittsburgh defenses in the AFC North for Marvin Lewis I don’t know what to tell you.
Couldn’t find a screen shot of his current numbers but here are some visuals to illustrate how well he played at various points so far:
Anyone would be foolish not to welcome a guy like Dalton with open arms assuming we can’t make a move to secure a draftee that Payton thinks could step in and be ready to play right away if Brees is done.

He wanted to stay in the south, he never lived in the north. Not that hard to figure out

Crab legs are better in Louisiana

Dalton really regressed last year, but I can see a team who gets a camp/early season injury pick him up. There’s always at least one high profile qb injury.
