well yeah. that's half their job

They're both big physical DE's who are stout in run defense.

we bulked up smith too much and he lost his burst

and you can always get run-stopping DEs for cheap

we're paying these guys to be 2-way ends. they're not

Are they overpaid? Probably - but then again so is virtually every starting defensive lineman in the NFL.

Wait until next season when we have Grant, Smith, Ellis, and a healthy 2nd DT in there. This will be a top 10 front-seven in the league. Nobody will be running against us.

Agree completely. Our defensive ends are asked to do too much......stop the run and get 15 sacks a year. Can't do both. Both are overpaid as run stopping defensive ends.

What the defense really needs is a replacement for Shanle that can get to the Quarterback. That person along with 16 to 20 sacks from our defensvie ends would help alot.

Our defensive ends are asked to engage the Tight End or Offensive Tackle while making their way to the quarterback, once it has been established that it is a pass they are to get to the QB as fast as possible, if it is a run they are to shed the blocker to get to the runningback. Too much to ask of our defensive ends. Too much time goes by while reading the play to determine what is needed. McCray looks better because he goes for the QB almost all of the time, his speed allows for what few plays he gets on runningbacks. If you noticed this weekend Garcia killed us with his legs mostly because our Defensive ends were way up the field and all Garcia had to do was make one move on a linebacker. We need Maualuga to be in Balck and Gold next year killing opposing QB's.

The cheapest way out is Grant, but before he got hurt, he was better than Smith, tough decision. Can't really get rid of Smith. Probably gonna have to keep both, and sub McCray in as much as possible.
