Why we drew a league low 3 pass interference calls all season?

I thought this article was pretty interesting. I love Mike Thomas' quote on how to draw more; "Maybe whine more? That seems to work in this league. But I'm not a whiner"

The article points to the types of routes we run (or don't) being the culprit:
Routes that drew flags: goes (110 routes), curls (30), fades (26) and outs (22). Saints quarterback Drew Brees only attempted nine passes on go routes, 12 on fades, 61 on outs and 79 on curls

Why do you guys think we draw so few? Pass interference calls have gone up drastically and one of the best passing offenses in the NFL only draws 3 all season!? Something's rotten in Denmark

3 plays is underselling it a little. Try 12 yards.

12 yards for
306 against

This team was better than we thought

I think we know the real reason. The same reason we lost in Atlanta when the Falcons were gifted 9 first downs on penalties.

It could seriously be because Brees throws to receivers that are more open. He goes through his progressions and does not throw as often into tight coverage?? Not sure. I feel like I see him throw pretty perfect passes into tight coverage fairly often. The route question is an interesting thing though.

There’s no use in analyzing it. I remember plenty of plays this season that could have been called

I guess the easy way to test this is to compare him to other accurate QBs. Is there any correlation?

One of the main reasons is outside of Thomas we do not have anyone that will go and fight for the ball. How many times have we seen passes deflected or picked because the receiver was waiting for the ball to drop to them (especially Coleman). We have had a large # of PIs called against us that were BS and those that should have been called in our favor. But, at the same time you always see the other team's WR come back to the ball and fight through the CB (especially Crawley), but you rarely see that from our WRs.

I remember screaming at the tv when that happened..

I also agree that, besides Thomas, we don't have any aggressive wrs. For Coleman's size, I'm really disappointed with his progression. Anyone holding out hope that hell finally figure out how fricking tall he his and use it to his advantage? Goes to show you that measurables aren't everything

Also from the article:

But this season wasn’t all that unique. The Saints drew only four flags in 2016. This is starting to become a trend.

It has nothing to do with route concepts, the style of offense the Saints run, the type of wide receivers the Saints employ, or Drew's accuracy and ability to throw receivers open.

It has everything to do with "points of emphasis" given to the officiating crews for each game.

There is no bad luck either.

The trend is purposeful in nature.

A number of years ago against Atlanta, Brees threw 5 interceptions and no TDs.

A Falcon defender would hit the Saints receiver early causing a second defender to intercept.

A JG TD was taken off the board ending Brees' touchdown streak.

The Atlanta home officiating has happened before and not just the 9 first downs by penalty.

The ex-Falcon player ref substituted last minute with no paperwork name change adds to the trend and pattern of no calls for Saints opponents.

The Competition Committee sets the "points of emphasis".

Rich McKay of the Falcons is the Chairman of the Competition Committee.

CSP was added to the committee during the season.

CSP's input will be considered only during off season meetings.

His recent appointment is more window dressing over real substance.

Why the Saints, though?
