This week, we take a look back at the team's first attempt at being good. We had some gut-wrenching losses in '78.

The first year I started to hate the Falcons... I was 13

Saints lose twice to the Falcons with Steve Bartowski's "Big Ben" now known as a "Hail Mary"...

quote:

Two weeks later, the Saints were leading 17-13 in the rematch and intercepted a pass in the endzone to preserve the win. OH WAIT, phantom interference call that was so bad the official got suspended after the game, Falcons win by the same score, 20-17.

It's very depressing and sobering to ponder the reality of the situation in 1978 for the Saints. The franchise completed its 12th season, compiled a 7-9 record, which was their BEST record yet.

The moral victory, I suppose, is: they say that the Saints played some good football against some excellent teams that season.
