The dispute in the board mock draft got me thinking. A lot of guys wanted to take one of the DT remaining on the board or Verrett, but what if (for the sake of argument) Verrett is only a nickel corner (I don't want to drag out another discussion about player height), then what would he do on our team?

Vaccaro was our nickel back last year. Yes, he was moved around a lot, but he was doing that the most. And with Payton saying he'd have a more focused role this year, but what do you think that means? I'm really getting a headache thinking of how to use all these guys, and we haven't even drafted yet.

He move to a more traditional safety role and Bush roam near the line?

Or vice versa

Would be so much fun getting paid to pick Brees off in practice. I think that will help a guy like Kenny out a lot more than people realise. Seems to learn fast and having one of the best to push and challenge you is going to pay off.

some analysis looking at this

cept written before Bush re-signed. I think it'll be more Byrd free centerfielder, Bush stronger type enforcer, and Vacarro moving around. Who know tho? The fun part is knowing Ryan will juggle the scheme to make the best use of the players on the field.

But then again this sounds more like him going more strong safety-

“Kenny played in a lot of spots last year. I think he’ll play in less of those spots this year,” Payton said. “That vision this year will be a little ... clearer.”
Payton explained how packages that included Vaccaro in addition to two other safeties last season at first were in reaction to the raft of injuries New Orleans dealt with at outside linebacker. Will Smith and Victor Butler suffered year-ending injuries in the preseason, and the Saints went into Week 1 with three outside linebackers.
And so the plan, Payton suggested, is for ball-hawk Byrd and hard-hitting Vaccaro to play off each other as much as possible.

“There’s a clear vision of how we want to use them,” Payton said, “and that’s important.”

I saw this before and forgot to respond.

I think it means he will play very little nickel and centerfield and will primarily be in th box.

Having Jenkins and Harper really made us have to keep Vaccaro off the line at times.

Replace them with Byrd and Bush and 4 capable corners and I think that takes the need for him to play nickel and centerfield non existent.

That said, he will be moved around in the box. Between covering TEs and backs to blitzing to stopping the run, that's how he'll be used.

He is s great in box safety who has coverage ability but is more of a rover/ cover ss . That was s given when we signed Jarious.

In base D, it will be Byrd and KV at S spot, with Lewis and Champ.

When we go nickel, which is what most teams run now a days majority of the game due to the spread and pass nature of the game, it will be KV at the nickel spot with Byrd and Bush at S and Lewis and Champ at CB.

We also have the ability to change that up a lot. If we play a team with a good slot WR, we can bump Champ inside to the slot CB and have White / PRob or KV play the other CB spot. KV played a lot of diff roles last season and has the ability to play any DB spot.

KV can also play the OLB spot with the ability to blitz off the edge, with Byrd and Bush up top if we want to do that. Rob Ryan runs a 3 man front on D, which means you have 8 guys between LBs and DBs. Doesnt really matter how many LBs / DBs you put out there.

I think a more focused role means we will put him on the ball a lot more this year in that rover / joker role. More so than we did last year. As a rookie, we put him on the ball some to see if he can handle it. He showed he can, but when we moved him all over the field we had a hole back at S with Harper and Jenkins back there. Bush didnt really get that much PT until later in the season. And then you look at what we did in FA, signing Byrd, keeping Bush, signing Bailey. We are gonna have KV all over the field on our opponents top offensive threat. Might be on some RBs, might be on some TEs, might be on some slot WRs, might be on some split out WRs. Hes so versatile that he can play all those spots and at a very high level.

I'm extremely excited about seeing Vaccaro in a role that primarily has him utilized as a strong safety this season. As that article stated, the potential brilliance of KV was on display from day one in his ability to guard TG.

Having someone like KV who can be up in the box for run support and then take the first releasing threat, be it carrying a TE vertically up the seam or getting out into the flats on a RB, all with Byrd playing centerfield behind him?

So much fapping.

I love KV as much as the next guy and he does have legit cover skills, but I think we leave the WR covering to the corners this year. I don't see them wanting to take him out of the box.

I think FootballNostradamus is thinking the same. Leave him as a rover in the box to stop the run, blitz, and cover TEs and RBs.

The one thing I'm not sure he's great at is blitzing.

He's decent at it, but yeah not great. I still think he'll lead the DBs in blitzes this year though just because I don't see us using many corner blitzes (we didn't do many last year, though with White at nickel that could change) and I don't see Byrd blitzing or Bush blitzing much.

Plus he's the one that will be in position to blitz more often.

I don't see us going Harper level with it or anything, just the occasional blitz to keep teams off balance.

I think white might make a great Blitzer.
Bush too.

Both hard hitters.

When Greer was healthy and we started playing White more at nickel he did get some blitz chances. Not sure of the counts, but he may have lead the corners in blitzing while only playing 55% of the snaps.
