Lineman caught it but can’t advance, would be our ball where he caught it, which was short of the line to gain

Wouldn’t have won that one

And what if they say it’s not a fumble? That how you want to use a timeout?

Payton assumed, probably correctly Bc the refs suck, that they wouldn’t change the call and we’d just burn our last challenge

I have no faith the refs would have made that observation. We already lost one challenge. Can't lose the second or were screwed.

Probably wouldn’t have won and we got the ball anyway.

We would have lost, because it was a forward pass. Highly unlikely they would have overturned that portion of the call.

Could the penalty no be declined and then have the ball in that spot?

Right, that’s why Sean didn’t try it. But in theory, that’s what should have happened.

That is probably what Sean P was asking.

Didn’t we lose our first challenge? So can’t challenge again?

100% fumble batted forward. Saints ball at spot of fumble. fricked ourselves out of almost 40 yards of field position by not challenging

We did. BUt in truth it goes back to challenging the earlier play at the goal line. I think it was a TD, but it was close and it was 2nd and goal from the half yard line. Shouldnt have challenged it.
