We are one defensive coordinator and a few players away from having a Top 15 defense.

A good FS would help a ton, but the money vs. production of our DE's will make it really tough to have a good defense for another few years. Unless by "a few players" you mean a FS + a productive DE, something we can't afford.

i'd agree

i was really impressed with Tracy Porter early on...as long as neither KK or JB are on the roster next year, I'm sold...

This is true for every defense in the league

What a stupid question

Priorities on defense (not counting Gibbs):

1. FS (CBs will look 100x better with a safety who is competent enough to at least maintain his over-the-top coverage)
2. DE (Smith and Grant have all the talent in the world and are decent in run support but just haven't produced a pass rush. We've got to get rid of one of them if for no other reason than cap room)
3. DL/OLB (Can never have enough depth on D-line. And Shanle still isn't what you need at the WLB, even though he has played a little better this year I think. Fujita needs to step it up as well)

Thoughts?

I really think that DeMarrio Pressely will be the answer on the interior line. Sed Ellis is a monster but needs help. Shanle and Fujita will never see All Pro status and both positions could be upgraded. The secondary needs the most help. Get another corner that can compliment Porter and move McKenzie to FS. KK and JB needs to be released and upgrade this position with the draft. Another issue is that we are approximately 13 million under the cap, so we can get someone. Grant/Smith needs a "in your face" defensive coordinator. These guys have been the greatest letdown by their lack of production. Qb hurries are the biggest joke stat I have ever heard of.

True. Gibbs is turning out to be Payton's Carl Smith.

I agree (since Top 15 means only top 1/2)....but do you realize how far we are from a new DC?? Seems like it could be light years when you realize how HC's and coordinators appear to be "jerned at the hip".

i'd say 2 defensive players (1 being a safety) and a DC away from being Top 15
