Have to go with OP. Take out the philly game and Trequan had like 5 catches last year. He was terrible.
For the record, I probably thought of Trequan Smith as a 90% lock to make the team, with a slim 10% chance that he’s either just not where he needs to be this preseason or some other guys really make it a difficult decision.
I saw the article and was curious if other people were thinking that way as well. I recalled mixed (but mostly positive) opinions of him last year. I know the saints are obviously invested, as he was a 3rd round pick, but we’ve seen surprise cuts before.
I’m pulling for Kirkwood also. Besides a big drop against the Steelers, he seemed to be solid when called upon.

Kirkwood is the regular from last season who isnt a lock.
Not a stone cold lock, but special teams gives him a huge boost imo.

Trequan is good, no doubt. But my sort of off the wall prediction is that kirkwood emerges as a legit #2 option for us this year

Never mind they'll keep at least one extra WR as long as Thomas holds out. No way they are letting go of Trequan.

So does Dez take Trequan’s spot and get a ring?

How is this thread still alive? T. Smith was the #2 WR on the team in receptions last year as a rookie. He was #4 on the team in total receptions and targets. He was #3 in receiving yards. He was #2 in yards per receptions (of people with 10 or more receptions). He was 2nd on the team in receiving touchdowns and had the second longest reception on the team behind Michael Thomas.
He’s on a rookie salary!
He was tied for 8th overall of all rookies last year in TDs. He was tied with Keke Coutee for 10th overall in receptions by a rookie WR last year.
While nobody is ever completely safe, what the hell makes you think he’s on the bubble?!

Lol I don’t!
I saw the article and wondered if others felt the same way!

Remember Smith only saw 44 targets last season. Combination of being a rookie and injury
Extrapolate Smith's per target numbers last year to say 100 targets
63 receptions
982 yards
12 TDs
It'll always be tough for Smith to put up volume numbers when MT and Kamara are going to see over half of Brees' targets, who is throwing less as the years go by. Now Cook will probably be good for another 80 targets or so.
We cannot be consumed with Smith's raw numbers. He just needs to be a threat and to answer the bell when called upon.

Tre’Quan Smith has a spot. Why question a second year player. He is young and talented WR with a lot of potential. Better question would have been to question Ted Gin spot on the team.
