Thursday NFL far worse than "Bounties" - Jason Whitlock with the boom

It’s going to take death, a serious injury or a lawsuit to stop the NFL’s desire to televise live games seven days a week, six months a year. If a team can play four games in 17 days, why can’t teams play an 18-game regular season?
But Gregg Williams is evil because he instructed his defensive players to attack the head. Really? What’s more dangerous, deeds or tough talk, a brutal schedule or a bounty system that rewards you for what you were going to do anyway?
The vilification of the Saints and Goodell’s hypocrisy infuriate me. Thursday night football endangers the health of far more NFL players than some flimsy bounty system Vilma participated in.
Goodell earns more money than Vilma. Goodell could serve as commissioner for another 10 to 15 years. Vilma is staring at the end of his career. But Vilma is the guy who is fighting to avoid having a year’s salary stripped from him so Goodell can continue the charade that he cares about the health and safety of NFL players.
I wish Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, etc., had the guts to stand up for Vilma and demand that Goodell end his witch hunt. If the offensive stars supported Vilma, it would do more to create solidarity among all NFL players, end bounties and promote safety than all of Goodell’s helmet-to-helmet flags and whatnot.
The players need to protect themselves. Goodell and the owners aren’t going to do it.
I normally cant stand Whitlock, but freaking

valid point
3 days of rest is a joke as far as keeping players healthy

In the context of punishing the Saints and talking about the Saints situation in particular I agree.
Using the leagues stance on bounties to point out its hypocritical stance on other issues like scheduling and desire for 18 game season is fair IMO though

exactly. "player safety" is not a concern of Goodell, only $$$ is
punishing the Saints for their "heinous crimes" is to save the league money from lawsuits by pretending to have some steadfast stance on cleaning up the game
its all one big joke, but im glad the media seems to finally be calling Goodell out for it

overall a nice boom against Goodell.
Brees has been pretty vocal about sticking up for Vilma. I do agree though that it couldn't hurt if some more "big" named NFL royalty were to stand up to the credibility of the game and how Goodell is running things... but Goodell has everyone scared except for the players he has unjustifiably come down on.

Pretty good stuff there. Now we get to wait for the next infuriating stuff from Whitlock which should be here in a week or two.

nice, I do think a lot of people are starting to see behind the curtain no matter their take on the Saints issues. Corporate-money-first Goodell is not the omnipotent overseer of the good of the game. He is a hired hand lawyer for the owners. He's a professional double-speaker perfect for today's politically correct everything world. He can crusade for player safety when the ultimate goal is more about protecting the owners from lawsuits. He can endlessly spew about the integrity of the game while allowing Lingerie Football League, 7 man league, high school, and Division 3 refs to supervise the highest level of play in the world.
Feb. '12-
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell’s recent five-year contract extension will, by the end of its term, roughly double his current annual pay of about $10 million, sources said.
Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank, chairman of the league’s compensation committee, declined to comment on financial details but confirmed the extension would bring Goodell in line with other top sports commissioners. MLB’s Bud Selig is believed to earn more than $20 million annually.
---yeah, he really loves "the game"

I really like thursday night football as a fan, but as a player it must suck. I think they should make it to where you only play a Thursday night game after a bye week.

They technically only had one day to prepare as Monday's are generally off days in the NFL. I'm not sure if this was the case for the bears and the packers but Wednesday's are travel days as well.
At least the players have Friday sat sun and Monday off.

agree.
I've always wondered, if you could change the world, and instead of the general public loving high scoring, big play, passing feasts...if defense was what the public wanted would Goodell and the owners taken this stance.
This emphasis on player safety by penalizing and fining defensive players for every hit fits nicely with the majority of fans desire to watch high scoring games/fantasy points.
If encouraging player safety hurt ratings/the bottom line, would the league have gone this route? I say no or at least not nearly to the extent it has.

Actually that level of compensation is pretty different than what most CEO's get.
Unless you are restricting it to Fortune 500 CEO's, the majority of CEOs in America aren't getting compensation in the 10's of millions of dollars.

My bad, I'm restricting it to fortune 500 companies
